Three locks in a bible is all that remains
Of a mother and two daughters all now gone
From Clover in Virginia on the wrong side of the tracks
Deborah, her sister Elsie and the immortal Henrietta Lacks

Henrietta’s now with Jesus for all eternity
And HeLa’s here on earth for just as long
Henrietta left a family and a legacy behind
Although she never knew it another saviour of mankind

Born into the home-house, four walls and nothing more
Not many years had passed that they’d been free
Still working in tobacco fields from early morn till night
Trying to scrape a living and a future none too bright

Henrietta had five children, tried to teach them right from wrong
Underneath her favourite oak tree in the yard
She wanted many more but her cancer grew too fast
Elsie sent to an asylum months before her mother passed

No one told the legacy she left
An unmarked grave was all her family knew
No one gave an insight to what she helped provide
While others made their millions, her family cast aside

50 years have passed and her story’s finally known
Deborah and her reporter finally won
But Deborah’s joined her mother and her sister on God’s shore
Three locks in a bible together evermore
